Earwax Removal By A Qualified Professional
Having trouble hearing, or are sounds muffled and not quite as sharp as they used to be? You may be suffering from an earwax blockage. Come to Earwax Away Thanet, in Thanet, and I can help with any earwax problems you are having.
Learn More About Ear Wax
Earwax is produced by Sebum and Cerumen cells that are located near the inside of the entrance to our ear canal.
Earwax is not a result of poor hygiene. Its purpose is to protect our ear. It has antibacterial properties and is highly acidic which helps deter insects from venturing into our ear. When earwax hasn’t migrated naturally out of the ear canal it can become trapped and begin to cause difficulties such as hearing loss, irritation, tinnitus, infection and even affect our balance. Our ear canals are also lined with skin and sometimes hair. This natural debris can accumulate behind trapped wax adding to the issue.
Safely Treating Ear Canal Blockages
There are a whole range of ear drops and sprays aimed at helping to dissolve and move the blockage, some of these products can, if used inappropriately or for extended periods, actually add to the issue.
The only product we recommend to be used regularly, without harm, is medical grade olive oil. The reality is that we are unable to see inside our ear canals but when wax is at the stage where it is causing troubles with our hearing, professional removal is often necessary and the safest and most reliable method.
The use of microsuction is now recognised as the gold standard and best practice for the removal of excess and compacted ear wax
Aural Microsuction Wax Removal
Microsuction is considered to be the “gold standard” when it comes to resolving earwax issues, this is the primary treatment offered by Earwax Away Thanet. A small probe is carefully inserted into the ear canal and wax is gently manipulated out of the ear canal.
Unfortunately, access to microsuction treatment via the NHS is limited, and even if you are fortunate enough to be referred, you can face a lengthy wait time.
My microsuction treatment is available by appointment, and waiting times are kept to a minimum.
Irrigation
Where appropriate, I may suggest water irrigation, which consists of a warm water wash, where the pressure involved is incapable of causing damage to the eardrum.
Rest assured all treatments will be fully discussed prior to commencement.
Otoscopy
I may offer a short, visual check using an Otoscope to ascertain the condition of the ear canal.
General Consultation
On occasion, where a full appointment has been booked on the assumption of wax, and it is found that no wax is present, I reserve the right to make a nominal charge. During this appointment I will spend time with you to explain the anatomy of the outer ear and the possible causes that may relate to the symptoms you are experiencing, with a view to helping you access further treatment via the pharmacist or GP services.
